FSSAI Registration Overview

FSSAI registration is required for all food business operators (FBOs) in India. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal body formed under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. Its main job is to make sure that food products go through proper quality checks, helping to prevent food contamination and the sale of low-quality products. Getting an FSSAI license is necessary for every food business in India, as it ensures the food is safe to eat and meets quality standards set by the government.

1. Basic FSSAI Registration

This is for small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs. It is generally applicable for small manufacturers, petty retailers, or small-scale food processors. The FBO needs to obtain a basic FSSAI registration by filling out Form A.

2. State FSSAI License

The State License is required for medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores. This applies to businesses like small to medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, and distributors. It requires filling out Form B and is issued by the state authority.

3. Central FSSAI License

This is required for large food businesses with an annual turnover above ₹20 crores or businesses involved in exporting, importing, or operating across multiple states. This license is issued by the central authority, and the application is done using Form B.

Benefits of FSSAI Registration

Getting a FSSAI license for your food business is a good idea for both you and your customers. Here are some benefits of Fssai registration

  • Making Customers Feel Secure: A FSSAI license tells customers that your business is real and follows safety rules. This makes customers trust your products more than businesses without a license.

  • Showing You're Reliable: Putting your FSSAI license number on your place and packaging shows that your business is professional and honest, making your brand look good.

  • Teaching Safe Practices: The process of getting a license includes checking and training to make sure your staff knows how to handle food safely. This reduces the chance of making people sick or contaminating the food.

  • Keeping Things Clean: Following food safety rules helps keep the quality and cleanliness of your food consistent in making, storing, and delivering.

  • Getting More Opportunities: Having a license lets you take on bigger projects, sell to big stores and restaurants, and even sell your products in other places. This opens up opportunities for your business to grow.

  • Getting Money Easier: Banks and people who invest in businesses are more likely to give money to businesses with licenses. It shows them that you care about safety and following the rules.

FSSAI Registration Process

1. Application Submission

Determine the type of FSSAI registration required based on the scale and turnover of the business.

Fill out Form A (for basic registration) or Form B (for state and central license) with the necessary details.

Submit the form along with the required documents either online or at the respective state FSSAI office.

2. Document Verification

The submitted application and documents are scrutinized by the FSSAI authorities.

Authorities may request additional information or documents if required.

3. Inspection

For state and central licenses, an inspection of the food business premises may be conducted by an FSSAI official.

The official ensures that the business complies with the required standards and guidelines.

4. Approval and Issuance:

Once the application and premises are verified, the FSSAI issues the registration or license.

The registration or license is provided with a unique 14-digit number, which must be printed on all food packages and displayed at the business premises.

Validity

The validity of the FSSAI registration or license varies:

Basic Registration: Valid for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the food business operator.

State License: Valid for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the food business operator.

Central License: Valid for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the food business operator.

The registration or license must be renewed before its expiration to continue the business operations legally.
